Sometimes the noise or smell is not in the roof at all. Scratching inside a wall, a smell near a power point or skirting board, or flies around a cornice can all mean an animal is in a wall cavity. The crew we book starts by narrowing down the spot, listening at the wall and using the smell or any stains as a guide. They check the roof space directly above the wall, since that is usually where the animal got in. Where they can, they look into the cavity through existing openings such as vents or gaps along the ceiling. If needed, they may cut a small inspection hole in the plasterboard, which they always discuss with you first. The check usually covers:
- Finding where in the wall the animal is
- Checking the roof space above for the way in
- Getting a live or dead animal out of the cavity
- Treating any smell left in the wall
Once the animal is out, the crew can show you where it got into the wall and give you a price to seal that gap. Any small inspection hole they cut is left neat so it can be patched easily. Rats in walls often mean a gap lower down too, so the crew checks the outside walls as well.
